NARCISSISTIC ABUSE
Malignant narcissists are individuals characterized by their manipulative and controlling behavior. Power holds significant importance in their lives, and they exhibit various forms of abuse—financial, sexual, emotional, or physical.
The prevalence of narcissistic abuse is on the rise and is observed in relationships, organizations, and within society at large.
The Spectrum of Narcissistic Abuse
Narcissistic abuse can manifest in a range of behaviors, from subtle belittlement and exclusion to severe, ongoing forms of mistreatment.
This may include continuous criticism, threats, emotional outbursts, mind games, deceit, the silent treatment, and exerting unfair control over finances, often to the point where a partner must plead for money to cover essential expenses. In its most extreme form, narcissistic abuse can escalate to life-threatening violence.
Gaslighting and Its Impact
My primary focus is to guide clients in unravelling the roots of their negative self-beliefs and to help them recognise the detrimental impact of their inner self-talk.
One hallmark of narcissistic abuse is gaslighting—a tactic employed by narcissists to deny, lie, or shift blame for their actions or words.
This manipulative behavior serves to diminish the victim's self-esteem and confidence while fostering dependency on the abuser. Gaslighting is profoundly disorienting for the victim, leading them to doubt themselves and their perceptions.
Recognising the Need for Help
Victims of narcissistic abuse often remain unaware of their situation until their well-being deteriorates significantly. It's crucial to understand that help is readily available for those experiencing this form of abuse.
